Stretched Canvas Information

Patented process (RSA patent No. 007/05445 – Frame)

The Image Engineers’patented stretch-framing system has the following benefits:-

  back.jpg

  • The framework is made from Obichi, a renewable Central African resource, which is light yet strong and highly resistant to warping.
  • The corners are joined using professional picture framing methods.
  • The material is stretched without the use of staples or complicated canvas stretching machinery.
  • The system uses ramin dowels to produce a tight and perfectly even stretch which avoids any wrinkling & tearing of the canvas.
  • It results in perfect registration of images on the frame, and perfect canvas corners.
  • It is simple, cost-effective and aesthetic, even on the back.

Image Resolution

Ensure that your camera is set on the highest resolution. This will produce the largest file size which will be well worth it in terms of the final print resolution, particularly in large format.

The following table provides a rough guide for JPG file size to ensure adequate print resolution.

Images

Try to find the best images in terms of composition, exposure, contrast, focus, and resolution. Whilst we can do some image enhancement in Photoshop, essentially the better the original image, the better will be the final print.

If necessary, move back a bit or zoom out so that your subject does not fill the frame. This will then provide enough space around the subject for gallery wrapping. We can always crop the image later to get the best composition.

Edge Bleeds

Be aware of the fact that we require 50mm of print all round your subject image for wrapping the edges of the frame. As the frame size gets smaller, more and more of the image is “lost” to covering the edges. E.G. at A0 size (840 x 1190) the loss is only 17%, whilst at A4 (210 x 300) it is 40%!

We can overcome this to some extent by using borders or cloning for wrapping the edges, which then allows the full image to be retained on the front face, and we will always advise you if we believe that your image is unsuitable in any way for gallery wrapping.

File Format

You can supply your image in any of the following formats:-
JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, PDF, Photoshop.

Canvas selection

We offer a range of different canvases to suit your image, your application and your budget. These range from inexpensive lightweight polyester to the highest quality archival grade cotton canvas offering 100 year guarantees.

Canvas care

Please be aware that each grade of canvas, and its associated printing process, requires a different level of care. Whilst some canvases are UV protected, waterproof and scratch-proof; others require the same level of care as high quality photographic prints and will not condone cleaning even with a damp cloth.
